Helpful Home Care Tips – Energy Smarter

Making your home energy smarter may not take as much energy as you think. Sure, you can opt for the big solar panel project on your home (possible big expense, too). But there are a few more down to earth, simple ideas that you can accomplish without too much effort or expense.

Lower or Raise Your Thermostat – While we all like warmth, in the winter months turn it down a few degrees and up a few degrees when the AC is cranking in the summer. Dropping or raising (depending on the season) by just three to five degrees not only uses less energy but saves on your utility bills.
Waste Not – Did you know your waste can be repurposed as fertilizer for your lawn or garden? Fruits, vegetables and even coffee grounds, when decomposed, become nutrient rich compost.
Earn a Gold Star for Energy Star Appliances – Energy Star-qualified appliances use 10-50% less energy than standard appliances and help reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. Using less energy saves you money, too.
Cold Washing is a Winner – Most of the energy used by your washing machine goes toward heating the water. When you can, wash your clothes on the cold cycle and even on the express setting if you have one. And while we’re on the subject of water, take showers instead of baths to save on usage and limit your time, and don’t continually run the water while shaving or brushing your teeth.
Change Those Filters – Furnace or AC filters can be easily overlooked. Replacing dirty filters with clean ones can reduce your energy consumption up to 15%, according to the Department of Energy. Depending on your lifestyle and type of furnace, it’s recommended to change them every 90 days.
These are just a few ideas. You know your home best, so I suggest you take a look around and see if there are other ways to make your home energy smarter. You may be surprised at what you come up with! If you have any questions about real estate and t he current market, I’m ready to talk to you at your convenience.
